Disabled people telling the story of disability in the past and today
Our Histories, Our Heritage launch event
Members of the Oyster Project are disabled people of all ages who are acting as Our Histories record-as-we-go reporters during 2012 - 13. We researched and told our heritage stories: how we experience our lives under themes which have presented themselves as part of that research.
We were particularly inspired by the 2012 Paralympics and the effect the entire range of performances by disabled people had on the public perception of disability. From this we researched the heritage of public perceptions of performance by the disabled under our research areas of recreation & of feeling included plus lifestyle and choices. Other research areas are: education; money; environment and health.
We also collected our heritage experiences of the wide range of Oyster Project events and activities we take part in and related them to the heritage elements we have included in our research as well as working closely with East Sussex Record Office and the Mass Observation Archive.
